    Calypso bulbosa var. americana

Go OrchidsThese small, brightly-colored orchids can carpet a mossy forest floor. Fairy Slippers are one of the earliest orchids to flower and hint at things to come later in the year. This was taken at one of my favorite orchid spots near Canmore, Alberta.

    Corallorhiza maculata var. occidentalis

Go OrchidsThe Spotted Coral Root is one of 3 leafless orchids found in Alberta. Easy to see how this orchid gets its name, with spots not just on the lip, but scattered on other parts of the flower. This variety, occidentalis, has the telltale flared distal portion of the lip.
