RON HANKO, RETIRED MINISTER

Ron Hanko, photographer

The Covid-19 crisis has impacted all of us - separating families and friends and cancelling many of the events we had been looking forward to, including the 2020 Native Orchid Conference. The annual symposium had been headed to the spectacular Olympic Peninsula in Washington.

Although we won't be hiking the peninsula in search of orchids, Ron Hanko has put together a virtual fieldtrip, highlighting many of the native orchids found there. The Olympic Peninsula is home to many of the native orchid species found throughout the Pacific Northwest. Approximately twenty of Washington’s thirty-two orchid species can be found there including several notable rarities. Exploring for orchids on the Olympic Peninsula is especially a delight - with many different habitats to visit and beautiful scenery to enjoy. From soaring peaks to ocean beaches, from coastal rain forests to beautiful lakes and rivers, the Olympic Peninsula is one of the most beautiful areas in North America.

About Ron:

"My wife Nancy and I are avid hikers, backpackers and photographers and often plan our trips, primarily throughout the Pacific Northwest, when native orchids are blooming.

My interest in orchids began nearly forty years ago, growing and blooming non-native orchids, especially high-altitude miniature species that I've documented in one of my blogs. That interest grew into a love of native orchids and I've seen and photographed all of Washington’s native orchids as well as others from northern California, Oregon, British Columbia, Alberta and Alaska."
