Halloween is supposed to be spooky. Spiders, snakes, evil spirits -- we expect this stuff to send a chill down our spine or haunt our dreams at night.
But orchids?
Many of us were introduced to Florida’s iconic Ghost Orchid by Susan Orlean’s book, The Orchid Thief. This rare spirit may only haunt the Everglades, but what other demons may be prowling about this time of year, their dark nature hidden behind the mask of an orchid flower?
This month we feature 13 spooky orchids captured by photographers David McAdoo, Gary Van Velsir, Jen Modliszewski and Jim Fowler. We dare you to view their photographs and reimagine these native orchids in the spirit and humor of Halloween -- legends and fairy tales and things that go bump in the night.
We hope you enjoy this Halloween gallery of spooky orchids but offer this caution. Next time you’re out in the woods, and tempted to stray off the path to seek out one of our native orchids, think twice: What danger could be lurking in those dark shadows?
Happy Haunting!
